The research activities of Laura Pastorino (LP) are focused in the fields of nanomedicine and tissue engineering.

During her PhD studies, she had been working on the fabrication of biomolecular nanostructures for sensors and pharmaceuticals by the application of the Langmuir-Blodgett technique.

During a study period at Louisiana Tech University under the supervision of Prof. Yuri Lvov, LP approached the layer-by-layer self-assembly technique for the design and fabrication of nanosensors. In the field of nanomedicine, LP is currently working on stimuli responsive nanostructured polyelectrolyte capsules and on biopolymeric micro- and nano-particles for the controlled delivery and release of drugs.

In the field of tissue engineering, recently LP developed a biomimetic hydrogel based scaffold for 3D neuronal networks to be coupled to microelectrode microarrays.

Moreover, LP is actively involved in the study of molecular interactions between cell membrane models and pharmacologically active molecules using synchrotron light (European Synchrotron Radiation Facility) in collaboration with the IMEM institute of the CNR and with Kazan Federal University.

Recently, LP was appointed member of the Scientific Council of the Interuniversitary Center for the Promotion of the Principles of the 3Rs in Teaching and Research.
